Don't do it. Please
don't do it.
(Exceptions are: If you have permission, OR if you have commissioned it + provide credit)
I know ive mentioned this before but there's always new people I gotta send a li'l reminder to s o here i am
Especially in regard to Tumblr. My one is here.
ALL of the art I post on here, is posted on there.
If I REALLY don't want you to repost something, I'll remove the share buttons and put a link in the description - that should be enough for you to think, 'hm, maybe I shouldn't repost it."
Most of my stuff now also has my tumblr URL posted on it - for the life of me I cannot fathom why people would repost ON TUMBLR, when the URL is visible right there!! why!!!
1:"It's free advertisement!"
For... for what?
For me? That's nice and all, but they weren't posted with advertising me in mind! They were posted as a showcase for my stuff with my name added as an afterthought at the end.
People who look at reposted artwork often don't care for checking out the original artist - they just see this artwork that's here, now, and appreciate it there. This gives back NOTHING to me. (I know there's exceptions. There's always a few who will check stuff out further in.)
2:"They like your art and want to share it with the world!"
Well, I like my art and want to share it with the world too! Unfortunately, the world won't pay attention to me, and likes to hang around big fanblogs that gain momentum through large amounts of collective reposting.
For example, check this out.
Posted, with credit given - though no links back to the original submissions, just my page.
Over 10k notes on that. And that was two years ago.
My average for posting things even today? Often I don't break 10, if I'm lucky it goes around 50-100. Only rarely have i had a 10k note artwork. The massive popularity of reposts almost never reaches back to me on here, on Tumblr, anywhere.
On sites other than Tumblr - they're not on those sites because I don't want them to be there.
If I wanted my art on Reddit etc, I would put it there myself! I have an account on there but choose not to upload - with that and other similar sites, please respect my autonomy as an artist by letting my art go where I choose it to go.
3:"It's the internet. People are going to repost things no matter what - you're just one person.
If I stopped putting my stuff online so it would stop getting reposted, then what? Then you'd have nothing from me. If every artist followed suit, there'd be no art on the internet.
And since this is how I make my income, it's not something I'm going to do, because that would be silly.
And inb4 people who are 'but people would scan it etc and put it online' do you want everyone to stop making art entirely just to prove a point
It takes so much more energy to put links in the description of my stuff, put watermarks, hide share buttons, and go around checking for reposts - when you could save so much time and just not repost the damn thing. Nobody's time is wasted, everyone is happy.
4:"Well whatever, I'm gonna keep reposting anyway"
To which I say, who hurt you in the past to make you such a Colossal Trashcan
That being said, Don't go out of your way to harass people who have reposted things. Keeping track of my art is my responsibility - if you see a repost and are concerned about whether I've seen it, send it to me in a note.
If it's older than a year or two, then I'm not too bothered by it since that's before I started really policing where my stuff ends up and I'll let it slide.
I know I've got it tacked everywhere not to repost but I feel like a Large Grump would nail the point home for whoever cares enough to read that filthy wall of text there
